I’m a high school teacher and my school has only recently put a ban on cell phones.  Therefore, I have seen the effects of both sides of this issue. I’m a much happier teacher now there is a ban because my job is 5 times easier.  I no longer need to play cell phone cop.  You see I already need to work very hard to keep my students attention. Compound that with the fact they have access to chat, text, browse the internet and play games, go on Facebook and Twitter while I’m trying to teach them biology and you can see it becomes a very daunting task.  Even Mr. Holland’s Opus would fail in these times. Now consider all the cheating that goes on as a result of this new technology.  The cheating increased ten fold when they had text and smart phones. They could text a friend to ask for the questions to tests their friends wrote in the class before or they could simply Google for answers or use their built in calculators for math questions.

The parents only valid complaint was they wanted a way to contact their kids while in school. But in my opinion the parents should not be contacting their kids in the middle of my lectures.  It’s simply ignorant and bad cell phone etiquette.  If they had a real legitimate reason to interrupt my class, they could call the school’s main number and have the student paged. It takes no time at all for the secretary to get in touch with me and notify the student.  In this way there is the added benefit of us tracking exactly what’s going on so the school isn’t in the dark when there are family issues. The school needs to be informed when a student up and left and when parents contact students directly and they leave, we are left in a panic looking for the student.

Most of the students arguments to keep cell phones in school were not valid. They claimed they needed their cell phone to take notes.  I mean REALLY??  I just do not believe that. I can understand if they prefer to type their notes on a laptop or maybe a tablet but no, not a cell phone.  I think it’s just ridiculus that they would try to take notes all day on those little keyboards.

From a teachers point of view, when you ask the question, Should Cell Phones Be Allowed In School, my answer will always with out question be NO. Computers, laptops, access to internet when supervised and E-Readers are all helpful tools in the classroom.  But Cell Phones, No Way!!
