Should Cell Phones Be Allowed In School?
It’s a highly debated topic today at school boards and dinner tables around the country. Kids are very social and cell phones are their key to communication with friends. If you have kids or teenagers, you know this fact already. Perhaps you bought your child their first cell phone simply to free up incoming calls on your home phone or your cell phone? But teachers and school boards complain they are too distracting in the classroom. It’s fine to demand no cell phones in class but that often fails as kids sneak them in from their locker. Often times the only recourse is to ban them from the schools.

1. The most common argument to allow cell phones in school is that it is a very convenient way for parents to contact their children when needed. It helps regarding pickup and drop off before and after school but also to coordinate before and after school activities and dinner plans. It also provides a sense of security for both parents and children in an emergency. Schools and teachers argue that parents don’t need to keep in constant contact with their children all day. The children are busy enough learning, studying and chatting with friends. If the parents need their kids they can call the school and have them paged very simply and quickly. It also helps the school keep tabs on the flow of information in and out of the schools.
2. The second most commonly argued point is that they have features and tools that help kids, study, take notes, organize homework due dates with the calendar and research information. It decreases the amount of computers required in class as many of those tasks can be done while sitting at their desk. This means less costly IT staff supporting the computers, networks and software. The schools claim the old way of doing things is just fine. Nothing beats writing things down with a pen and pencil. Isn’t it more exciting to be caught passing a love letter in class then a sex text?
3. The third most common argument is that this is the modern age and technology is going to continue to advance. Cell phones are only going to become more prevalent, not the other way around. Essentially schools who protest against cell phones in school are fighting a losing battle. They may as well welcome them into schools and integrate them into the classrooms and use them as tools for learning and study. Many schools have already changed their tune and accept them in school like the many schools in the Tampa Bay area. Many are going one step further and are studying ways to incorporate them into learning.
